Lake Nemi has a surface area of 1.6 sq km. It is oval in shape and fills the bottom of two ancient volcanic craters which were joined together by the slippage of their contiguous walls. Several Musterian cusps have been found on the surface along the lakeside and these are now in the Pigorini Museum in Rome. The cusps provide evidence that Neanderthal man lived in the Albano hills when the volcano was inactive. Remains of tombs from the Iron Age have been found on the east side of the lake. The medieval village of Nemi, standing on the edge of the crater, is famous for its strawberries. |
