Capoluogo di regione, Catanzaro (ca 100000 ab., 343 m.) è situata nella parte centro-orientale della Calabria, a pochi km dalla Sila Piccola e vicinissima al Mar Ionio - dove sorge il quartiere marinaro di Catanzaro Lido. Il nucleo urbano originale si trova sulla sommità della lunga propaggine silana, tra le valli dei due torrenti Musofalo e Fiumarella. Cuore amministrativo della regione e sede dell’Università della Magna Grecia, Catanzaro è stata ricostruita più volte e conserva poche tracce delle epoche passate.
