Known by the Romans and popular in the Middle Ages, the spa station in Bagni di Lucca reached the height of its fame at the beginning of the 19th century when Napoleon’s sister, Eliza Bonaparte, restored the spa buildings and made this little town near Lucca a favourite destination for scholars and musicians from all over Europe. Many illustrious visitors also tested the efficacy of the therapeutic waters, including Italian poets Pascoli and Carducci, Lord Byron and Puccini.
The hot water contains calcium bicarbonate, chlorine sulphur and sodium, and comes to the surface at a temperature of more than 50°C from nineteen springs in the area. It is particularly indicated for ear, nose and throat complaints, disorders of the respiratory system, skin conditions, gynaecological problems, and disturbances of the metabolism and gastrointestinal system.
Delightfully set in green countryside, Bagni di Lucca welcomes visitors to two spas, a thermal beauty centre and two grottos with natural steam. A range of natural cosmetics has recently been created and these are used during treatments.
Its position in the Lucca area makes Bagni di Lucca an ideal departure point for trips into the countryside and discovering art treasures. With Lucca only 20 km away and the villages of the Garfagnana even nearer, you’ll be spoilt for choice.
