m.903 Connections: Train station of Modena at km 60. Buses: from Bologna, Modena, Pisa, Lucca, Livorno, Firenze. Road: Autostrada del Sole with exit at Modena; highway Firenze - Mare. Information: Pro loco Tourist Office, tel. 0536-68825 Ski Facilities: 1 funicular, 7 chairlifts, 15 ski lifts. Description Originally a Benedictine monastery, founded in 752 by S. Anselmo, this is now a winter and summer vacation resort of the Modena Apennines, located at the base of Cimone near the confluence of the Fellicarolo and Ospitale Rivers. The ski area is at a high altitude, at the end of the road that from Fanano descends to Canevare. The lift facilities are connected with those of Riolunato and Sestola and, together with these, to the vast ski area of Cimone. With a single ski-pass it is possible to use 1 cable railway, 10 chairlifts, with a windshield because of their high speed, and 12 ski lifts. From 2100 m in elevation, numerous slopes wind down, of varying lengths and difficulty, for a total of 50 km. Among these we note the red "Sette Fontane,” 2,5 km long, and black "Direttissima,” "Nord Beccadella" and "Nord cable railway,” all F.I.S.I. approved and furnished with a system of artificial snow. Lovers of alpine skiing can traverse interesting itineraries by taking off from the upper station of the chairlift called "Cimoncino II Tronco" and going up the crests of Mount Cimoncino and Mount Cimone as far as "Libro Aperto." Cross-country skiers have at their disposition a beautiful track that covers 3 km within a forest of fir trees in the area of Lago delle Ninfa. After-ski activities include the ice stadium and the riding stable, besides bars, restaurants cinema and discotheques. |
