This thermal resort is situated in the heart of the Maremma area, in a valley of the River Albegna, and is surrounded by hills covered with olive groves and cypresses. Nearby is the ancient village of Saturnia which still has remains of its pre-Etruscan, Roman and Sienese walls. The medieval village of Manciano, 13 km away, is also interesting and has a fortress built by the Sienese in the fifteenth century. The spa spring in Saturnia comes to the surface at 37°C, a temperature at which visitors can take a dip in the spa water swimming pools at any time of the year. The water contains high levels of anhydride carbon dioxide and hydrogen sulphide and is recommended for skin and liver disorders and problems in the respiratory system.
