QUESTIONS & ANSWERS
|
Peschiera (province of Verona) is a tourist resort on the southern shore of Lake Garda, at the end of the Olive Grove Riviera where the River Mincio flows out of the lake. In Roman times it was called Arilica and it became an important centre in the Venetian Republic. During the Risorgimento it was part of the quadrilateral defensive set up by the Austrians, in which Verona, Legnano and Mantua also took part. The old town centre still has its massive sixteenth century walls with a moat and four buttresses and strong gates at the corners. Nearby is the sixteenth century Sanctuary of the Madonna del Frassino which contains sixteenth and seventeenth century paintings. |
