The health resort of S. Giuliano Terme – which was popular on account of the curative properties of its waters as far back as Etruscan and Roman times – has had a spa complex since the time of the Grand Duchy of Tuscany when Peter Leopold of Lorraine built one for himself. Since then, this delightful little town near Pisa has been offering its earthy alkaline water containing bicarbonate sulphate, ideal for treating rheumatism and liver complaints, respiratory system problems and gynaecological disorders. The springs supply the West Baths where they bubble to the surface at 38°C – a temperature which is good for inhalation treatments – and the East Baths at 40°C – the ideal level for mud treatments, baths and massages.
