Bagno Vignoni, a quaint little town in the Orcia Valley, near Siena, has been a spa centre since time immemorial and long known as a special destination for holidays where the emphasis is on relaxation, peace and quiet. Its fame derives from the castle that still overlooks the town and from the curative springs which the Etruscans and Romans enjoyed. The earthy waters, containing alkaline bicarbonate of sulphur, come to the surface with slight radioactivity at a temperature of more than 50°C and flow into a large 16th-century bath in the medieval centre around which the delightful town has grown up. The bath offers a wonderful view but it is the spa establishment (open from June to September) that provides treatments. Baths and mud baths are good for rheumatic conditions and neuralgia, while inhalation and irrigation treatments are indicated for gynaecological problems and disorders of the respiratory tract. On the outskirts of the town, the newly restored Mulini Park is well worth a visit and a swim in the Val di Sole swimming pool is recommended.
