By car: the A 4 and A 23 Udine-Trieste motorways, exit at the Mestre Est toll booths (12 km). The A 4 and A 13 for Milan and Bologna.

This famous seaside resort grew up in the nineteenth century on a long island which separates the lagoon from the sea and which was once one of the city’s defence bulwarks. The tree-lined streets, the gardens, the sea front and the architecture give it a very elegant air. In recent years it has become internationally famous thanks to its tourist and

hotel facilities, its beautiful sandy beach and the cultural, art and sports events which are held in the summer.

You can see the Municipal Casino, the Palazzo del Cinema which is the principal centre of the annual Film Festival, the Grand Hotel des Bains and the Moorish Grand Hotel Excelsior. Along the side of the lagoon are the sixteenth century Parish Church of Santa Maria Elisabetta, the Church of San Nicolò, first built in the eleventh century and rebuilt in the seventeenth, the sixteenth century Palazzo of the Council of Ten and the remains of the fortress of San Nicolò.
