Description Mount Amiata rises among the valleys of Orcia, Fiora and Paglia, in the provinces of Siena and Grosseto. Formed by a volcanic cone in the quaternary epoch, it is noted above all for the mining of mercury sulpher, used since the Etruscan age. Various holiday centers are scattered over the slopes, making the mountain an important area for hiking and for winter sports. The ski complex, near the towns Castel del Piano and Abbadia San Salvatore, is furnished with 2 chairlifts and 13 ski-lifts, which reach 1730 meters of altitude. From here 14 slopes of varying difficulty wind down, over a total of 18 km. Among these we note the 'Direttissima,' 'Nordica' and 'Panoramica.' Lovers of cross-country skiing have at their disposal 3 circuits of average difficulty that extend for a total of about 15 km. The after-ski activities are wide-ranging: sledding slopes, riding stable, sport fishing, swimming pool, sauna, covered tennis courts, game room, cinema, bars, restaurants and discotheques. Among the gastronomic specialties we recommend the 'crostini' (small pieces of toasted bread) with chicken livers, 'tortelli' (filled pasta), 'ribollita' (soup), 'farro' (a grain, known in English as spelt), loin of wild boar and for dessert, 'castagnaccio' or chestnut cake. |
