- ASCOLI PICENO - 62 KM
The beguiling town of Ascoli Piceno is the southern Marche's major centre and, as its tourist brochure says, it is a place you can see in a day yet never forget.
As a matter of fact Ascoli Piceno has a great charm and is an extremely interesting town. It is place on a rocky spur at the confluence of two rivers and easily reachable from the sea and from the mountains. Its origins are very ancient so much so that there were pre-Roman settlements.
Ascoli is a real museum in the open air, which shows the passage from the Roman organization to the medieval period and to the Renaissance.
‘Piazza del Popolo, the heart of the city, is every summer the setting of The Quintana Joust, an anciant tradition which testified since 1377: since 1955 it is one of the mostbeautiful historical tournaments in the Marches.
Other remarkable monuments include the Cathedral of St. Emidio, the Gothic church of St. Francesco, the Romanesque churches, among them the church of S. Maria Intervineas and of SS. Vincenzo and Anastasio, the ‘Palazzo dei Capitani’, the anciant towers in the medieval streets and the Roman Bridge. The Town Hall houses the most important Art Gallery in the Region.
It must not be missed a visit at ‘Caffè Meletti’ the most famous and antique coffee shop in the town.
- MACERATA - 45 KM
Known across the world for its annual open-air opera festival, Macerata is a human-scaled provincial capital that also warrants a visit for its other charms.
Its open-air opera festival in July has found an international following and takes place in the 7,000-seater Sferisterio - a monster of a Neoclassical arena erected by private subscription in the 1820's. As you swoon to a Verdi aria, you might care to know that it was originally built as a stadium for pallone, or Italian football.
Its centre was almost entirely built between the 16th and 19thC. The Renaissance two-tiered arcades of the Loggia dei Mercanti on central Piazza della Liberta' is the most striking piece of architecture.
The best of the city's palaces line ‘Corso Matteotti’, the road that leaves the square at the side of the Loggia, while ‘Corso della Repubblica’ will take you to ‘Piazza Vittorio Veneto’ and the civic gallery and museum. Here is a mixed bag of works by Umbro-marchigiani painters - most important is Carlo Crivelli's Madonna and Child.
Other notable buildings include the Basilica of Madonna della Misericordia (Vanvitelli) and the theatre Lauro Rossi.
A few kilometres to the south of the city lay two outstanding monuments:The Romanesque church of San Claudio al Chienti and The 12th Century Church of S. Maria a Piè di Chienti.
