| The Locanda di San Martino lies in the heart of Matera’s “Sassi” Historical District, and at the same time it is conveniently located at a very short distance (100 meters) from the city center. The Locanda radiates outward from the deconsecrated church of San Martino and the street of the same name, through a series of balconies that enjoy a sunny exposition and a wonderful view of the Sasso Barisano. There are twenty-two guest rooms situated on four levels, renovated with the greatest care in order to respect their original forms as single homes.
Guests will be able to savor the experience of staying in cave-dwellings of the very same type as those which have been inhabited here for thousands of years; these, however, have been adapted to the comforts of modern living. All rooms are equipped with private bath, air conditioning, satellite television and high speed internet connection. The rooms, common areas and levels are connected by passages cut into the rock, external stairways and an elevator which connects the lower three levels. |

By airplane:
Bari-Palese is the closest airport to Matera (50 km). From Palese, take a taxi or rent a car. Take State Road 96 to Altamura, then Matera. Upon request, we organize shuttle service from the airports of Bari and Naples-Capodichino.
By automobile:
from Naples, take the highway for Salerno, and then follow the A3 highway in the direction of Reggio Calabria. Turn off Sicignano for Potenza, where you follow State Road 407 (“Basentana”) until the turn off for Matera near Ferrandina Scalo. Proceed on this road another twenty minutes to arrive directly in Matera.
From Bari, follow State Road 96 for Altamura and then Matera.
From other locations further south, from State Road 106 (“Ionica”) which follows the Ionian coast, there is a turn off for State Road 175 for Matera.
By train:
from Rome and Naples there is train service to Ferrandina (on the Taranto line), with a connecting bus which arrives directly in Matera. From Bari there is a private train line, the Ferrovie Apulo-Lucane (FAL) which operates many trains and buses daily.
By bus:
there are bus connections to Matera from Bari, Naples, Rome and Milan.
