A string of pearls, seven kilometres long. A long line of peaked walls, harsh headlands, magnificent inlets, deep indentations, underwater grottoes and tunnels, low reefs, narrow valleys, fantastic pebbly sandy beaches that reflect in the uncontaminated sea of constantly changing colours; once blue now azure, turquoise, light blue, further out, a blue, the sky blue. It is always limpid, always calm.

The name derives from the greek "scopelos" (rock), in reference to the famous cliffs which are accessed from the Tonnara. Inhabited since prehistoric times (artefacts found in caves inland document the human presence from the Paleolithic), the area was known since ancient times for its abundance of tuna that was fished at sea and the Greeks called it “Cetaria” wich means “land of tunas”. The Arabs founded there a house inhabited by fishermen and shepherds, and in 1235, Federico II di Svevia, granted the property to a group of settlers of Piacenza, however, they left the house because of the continuous raids by pirates. In those centuries, in fact, the pirates who infested the Mediterranean used the bay of Scopello as a base for their raids: mooring the ships behind the stacks, they were practically invisible from distance. The towers give the landscape an air of mystery and charm that mix nature and history. They date back to different periods were part of a defense and communication system distributed along the entire perimeter of Sicily: communicating with one another through the fire at night and through the smoke at day it was possible to say very quickly throughout the island of any news of a military character. The oldest, probably built by the Arabs to protect the Tonnara stands on the cliff once connected to the mainland that were accessed perhaps with a bridge or a stair carved into the rock itself.
