 Ischia is volcanic in origin with a mountainous interior culminating in Mount Epomeo (788 metres). Nowadays the volcano is dormant but shows that it’s only sleeping with gas emissions and thermal springs spurting from every corner, right down to the sea. Thanks to its mild climate and the therapeutic qualities of its water, the island is a popular destination for international tourism in all seasons.
Ischia, the main town on the island, is situated in the extreme north-east and is divided into Ischia Ponte and Ischia Porto. The former is the old centre, a fishing village spread out around the little island on which the castle stands, while Ischia Porto is a seaside resort and spa which has grown up round the pine woods, on the edge of a buried crater.
There are many, many spa centres on Ischia, situated in Casamicciola, Lacco Ameno, Ischia, Forio, Serrara Fontana and Barano. The mineral spa waters contain either sodium chloride or alkaline bicarbonate. Of particular interest are the springs with the noble gas radon which, in very small quantities, is beneficial for physiological functions.
